What is Flexible Choice Cancer, Heart Attack and Stroke insurance by CIGNA?

Amongst list of critical illness diseases, these three diseases strike awe for the financial stress that may ensue besides medical expenses. With breakthroughs in medical technology to negotiate with these diseases, the survivor rate has remarkably increased. However, the pace of life slows down and financial strains increase.  This policy is available subject to eligibility based on underwriting guidelines for:

  • Ages 18 – 99 and your dependents
  • Guaranteed renewable for life
  • Lock in rate at Issue age of purchase
  • Individual, Couple, Single Parent, Family Coverage Options

Cigna offers flexibility to choose a base policy, either Cancer or Heart Attack and Stroke, and add qualifier riders of the other base policy. It provides lump sum benefits for diagnosis of cancer and/or heart conditions and stroke with the flexibility to add multiple riders for recurrence, restoration and more.

Things to know before I sign up for it

What are base policies with riders?

  • A lump-sum Cancer insurance policy pays 100% of your selected benefit amount, between $5,000 – $100,000, for a diagnosis of cancer (invasive) or carcinoma in situ (non-invasive).
  • A lump-sum Heart Attack & Stroke insurance policy pays a percentage of the selected benefit amount, between $5,000 – $100,000, upon a diagnosis of a heart attack, stroke or other qualifying event.
  • Each base policy (Cancer or Heart & Stroke) can add the other policy as a rider.

What all are available riders with base policy?

With base policies, there are optional riders available for added premium to increase benefits:

Cancer Recurrence Benefit Rider:

Only available on cancer base policy. Pays a percentage of the benefit amount upon additional diagnoses of cancer. The recurrence benefit applies when 100% of the base benefit amount has been paid and the insured has not received advice or treatment for cancer for at least 24 consecutive months from the date of the last diagnosis. Not to exceed an additional 100% of the benefit amount is payable under this rider.

Available benefit amounts are between $5,000 and $100,000 and must be the same as the base benefit amount. Benefit choice must be the same for all insured persons

Heart Attack & Stroke Restoration Benefit Rider:

Only available on heart base policy. This rider pays a percentage of the benefit amount upon additional diagnoses or procedure of heart attack, heart transplant, or stroke as shown in the Heart Attack & Stroke base policy table. The Restoration Benefit applies when 100% of the original benefit has been paid and the customer has not received advice or treatment from a physician for these specific qualifying events for at least 24 months from the date of the last diagnosis or qualifying event. The customer will receive 25% of the benefit if they have not received treatment for 24 months to five years, 75% for five years to 10 years and 100% after 10 years.

Available benefit amounts are between $5,000 and $100,000 and must be the same as the base benefit amount. Benefit choice must be the same for all for all insured persons.

Hospital Indemnity Benefit Rider:

Pays selected benefit amount from $100 – $1,000 for each day when you are confined to a hospital as a result of injury, sickness or complications of pregnancy, including confinement to the intensive care unit or coronary care unit. The confinement must be for at least 24 hours and benefits will not be payable for more than 30 days for any one period of confinement.

Upon attainment of age sixty-five (65), coverage for each insured person will be reduced by fifty percent (50%).

Intensive Care Unit Indemnity Benefit Rider:

Pays selected benefit amount from $100 – $1,000 per day when you are confined to intensive care unit as inpatient due to injury, sickness, or complications of pregnancy. The confinement must be for at least 24 hours and benefits will not be payable for more than 30 days for any one period of confinement.

Upon attainment of age sixty-five (65), coverage for each insured person will be reduced by fifty percent (50%).

Hospital and Intensive Care Unit Benefit Rider:

It is not available with the Hospital Indemnity Rider or the Intensive Care Unit Indemnity Rider. The benefits of both the Hospital Indemnity Benefit Rider and the Intensive Care Unit Benefit Rider are combined into one rider with this option. You will receive the selected benefit amount, from $100 – $1,000, for each day (at least 24 hours) that you are confined to a hospital as an inpatient due to injury, sickness or complications of pregnancy. It will pay twice the selected hospital indemnity benefit amount for each day that an insured person is confined to the intensive care unit.

Benefits will not be payable for more than 30 days for any one period of confinement. Upon attainment of age sixty-five (65), coverage for each insured person will be reduced by fifty percent (50%).

Return of Premium Rider:

Pays 100% of total premiums paid for the policy and any riders less claims paid upon the death of the primary insured.

  • Someone in the US has a stroke about once every 40 seconds.
  • Stroke accounts for 1 of every 19 deaths in the US.

Here are the highlights of some numbers from National Cancer Institute of their 2018 report:

  • In 2018, an estimated 1,735,350 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 609,640 people will die from the disease.
  • The number of new cases of cancer (cancer incidence) is 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 cases).
  • The number of cancer deaths (cancer mortality) is 163.5 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 deaths).
  • In 2016, there were an estimated 15.5 million cancer survivors in the United States. The number of cancer survivors is expected to increase to 20.3 million by 2026.
  • Approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes (based on 2013–2015 data).
  • In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease.

Please call or email to set up appointment with us to prepare electronic application based on the sample application the customer has prepared. We will quote you price of the products you have selected, take application over phone, and submit application to the insurance company. The insurance company will take phone interview with the customer, verify the information and confirm having received the application. Depending on the amount of insurance request, the application is processed.
